ACL reconstruction is one of the most common orthopedic surgeries performed on athletes. While surgical techniques have improved dramatically, the quality of your post-surgical rehabilitation is what ultimately determines your outcome. At NeoLife Physical Therapy, we've guided hundreds of patients through ACL recovery.
Phase 1 (Weeks 0-2): Protection and Early Motion. The immediate post-surgical phase focuses on controlling swelling, protecting the surgical repair, and beginning gentle range of motion exercises. Your NeoLife therapist will use manual techniques to manage swelling and begin restoring knee extension.
Phase 2 (Weeks 2-6): Restoring Motion and Building Strength. During this phase, we progressively increase range of motion, begin gentle strengthening exercises, and normalize your walking pattern. Manual therapy remains central to every session.
Phase 3 (Weeks 6-12): Progressive Strengthening. This is where real strength building begins. We'll introduce more challenging exercises, begin single-leg activities, and work on neuromuscular control. Your therapist will monitor your progress with objective strength measurements.
Phase 4 (Months 3-6): Functional Training. We begin sport-specific drills, agility work, plyometrics, and progressive running programs. This is where the one-on-one NeoLife model really shines — your therapist is monitoring your movement quality during every rep of every exercise.
Phase 5 (Months 6-9+): Return to Sport. Before clearing you for full competition, we perform comprehensive return-to-sport testing including strength testing, hop testing, and functional movement assessments. We don't clear athletes by calendar date — we clear them by meeting objective criteria.
